Squeeze on Citrus Got You Down?
As you may have heard, citrus has been feeling the heat recently.
USA Today quoted our Produce Alliance Market Report helping to spread the word on how, for lemons specifically, the majority of the fruit crop has matured much earlier resulting in shortages across all lemon varieties.
Unfortunately, both Valencias and limes have also hit a few road blocks with active markets, increasing prices, short and/or tight supplies, and hits to quality.
As always with any fluctuations in the market, flexibility and staying informed are key! Click here to subscribe to our continuous market updates, and scroll down to check out this week’s Market Report for the latest info on all commodities.
In the meantime, try turning to tropical trends! Tropical fruits like pineapple, kiwi, and mango as perfect stand-ins for citrus, as there are higher acid contents in them than other fruits and they cleanse the palate in a similar way.
For example, pineapple juice is a lovely alternative to lemon or lime juice in marinades and salad dressings. Mangoes translate really well in ceviches, salsas, and other Latin, Thai, or southeast Asian dishes that are citrus-heavy.
Also note that it’s super easy to play up the sour notes in strawberries and blackberries, which can be easily substituted for citrus juice and zest. Especially if they are pickled!
As we stick out the summer heat and diligently work to monitor citrus crops, it’s important to be aware of the other seasonal items that can come in handy in times of need.
